Frequently Asked Questions
A dental crown is a cap-like restoration that completely encircles a damaged or decayed tooth. It is used to restore its shape, size, strength, and appearance. Crowns can be made from various materials, including metal, porcelain, resin, or a combination of these.
You may need a dental crown if you have a tooth that is severely decayed, fractured, or worn down, if you have had root canal therapy, or if you want to improve the appearance of a discoloured or misshaped tooth. Crowns are also often used to anchor a dental bridge.
First Visit: The dentist will examine the tooth, possibly take X-rays, and then prepare the tooth by removing decay and shaping it to fit the crown. An impression of the tooth is made to create a custom crown. A temporary crown is placed while the permanent one is being made.
Second Visit: Once the permanent crown is ready, the temporary crown is removed, and the new crown is fitted and cemented in place.
After receiving a dental crown, you should be able to eat normally. However, it’s advisable to avoid extremely hard or sticky foods, especially with a temporary crown. Always follow your dentist’s recommendations regarding diet after the procedure.
